The Pillars of Hercules is a legendary and iconic geographical feature associated with Gibraltar. The Pillars of Hercules refer to two headlands that flank the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, separating the Atlantic Ocean from the Mediterranean Sea. In classical mythology, they were believed to have been created by the mythical hero Hercules as a commemoration of his great strength and a marker of the edge of the known world.
The Rock of Gibraltar, located on the European side, is traditionally identified as one of the Pillars of Hercules. Rising majestically from the peninsula, it forms a striking natural landmark that has held significant strategic and symbolic value throughout history. The other pillar, sometimes identified as Jebel Musa in modern-day Morocco, lies across the strait on the African continent. Together, these two pillars represent the westernmost extent of the ancient Mediterranean world.
The Pillars of Hercules have captivated the human imagination for centuries, symbolising the boundaries of exploration and the limit of the known world. They have been mentioned in ancient Greek and Roman mythology, as well as in historical accounts and literary works throughout the ages. Today, the Pillars of Hercules continue to be associated with Gibraltar, and the Rock itself has become a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can explore its fascinating caves, take in breathtaking views of the strait, and appreciate the historical and mythical significance of this remarkable natural formation. The enduring legacy of the Pillars of Hercules serves as a reminder of Gibraltar's geographical and cultural importance, attracting visitors from around the world who come to witness this awe-inspiring testament to ancient mythology and maritime exploration.

Smooth transportation in town of Gibraltar, rather long lines for the cable car but once up to the rock it is fantastic with the apes and the view. Very recommended!
